Growing a new lawn by planting grass plugs (with video)

Planting TifTuf Bermuda plugs
  • Use the ProPlugger 5-IN-1 planting tool to plug and plant spreading grasses such as ZoysiaBermuda, and Centipede
  • Not recommended for St Augustine Grass:  These plugs tend to fall apart during the transplanting process

There are 3 methods for planting grass plugs with the ProPlugger

1st Method:  Planting grass plugs from sod

Directions

  • Plant a section of sod
  • Let it root in for at least 3 weeks
  • Take plugs from the sod with the ProPlugger every 3″ apart
  • Plant the plugs in sections every 6″ apart
  • Fill in the holes with compost or a compost/soil mix
  • Water the new plugs just as you water new sod
Read this article for detailed directions on planting plugs from sod
Or, watch the video below for a quick summary of the process

2nd Method: Plant grass plugs from trays purchased online

  • These plugs are more expensive than sod, but convenient since you can buy them online and have them shipped to you
  • Read this article for more information on planting grass plugs from trays
  • Or, watch the video below for a quick summary of the process

3rd Method:  Take plugs from a neighbors lawn

  • Some customers have done this
  • They harvest plugs from their neighbors lawn with the ProPlugger, and fill the holes in with compost
  • The neighbor gets their soil amended, and they get free plugs
  • The planting and maintaining of these plugs is the same process as those above

4th Method

Buy a small amount of sod

Then use the ProPlugger to take plugs out of the sod

(This differs from the 1st method in that you don’t ever plant the sod)

Steps

  1. Lay the section of sod you purchased upside down
  2. Place the 2″ adapter plate on the ProPlugger
  3. Start from one corner of the sod square, and take plugs with the ProPlugger moving from one end to the other
  4. Repeat until you have removed all the plugs from the piece of sod
  5. The planting and maintenance is the same as above

4th Method

Purchase plugs that have been grown in trays

  • These plugs are more expensive than sod, but convenient since you can buy them online and have them shipped to you
